The SM420 is the older heavy duty, granny, 4 speed transmission used in Chevy and GM trucks. The large cast iron case with large bulge on the passenger sidemakes it easy to identify. It is an excellent 4 speed to swap into a Jeep with a Chevy or Buick engine.

You can also regear your transmission and transfer case with lower aftermarket gears to create an ultra low crawl ratio. Axle ratios had to drop to get the better gas mileage the EPA demanded. So in order to get cars moving with 3.08 or 2.88 rear end gears, cars that had engines with decent amounts of low end torque had "close ratio" transmissions with 2.64 first gears, and with smaller cubic inch engines first gear ratios in the 3.0 range.

My truck is a 1970 Chevrolet c20 dump truck, it is a super great truck, very easy to drive with this essentially 3 speed granny gear transmission.

The ribbing was only available on late cases and some grinding of the ribbing is required if it is to be used with a Dana 20 or Dana 18. The same is probably true if the ribbed case is used with a Dana 300. The ribbed SM420 case should not be confused with the later SM465 transmission.

I actually have atlas4 speed so my gear ratios in the t-case are 1:1, 2.72:1, 3.8:1, & 10.34:1 So I can chose between Overall 27:1 74:1 103:1 and 278:1 I think this range would be comparabe to duals? I actually was going to do duals, but not having a t-case to start with would have made it too expensive I think?

It's 4th gear is 1:1 as is the 4th gear in my current tranny, so last night I drove in 4th only on the highway.
